Workshop 1

Investigating Job Hazards: Tools for Workers and Committee Members to Help Identify Occupational Safety and Health Hazards at Work

Identifying hazards in the workplace is a critical step towards promoting safety and health and preventing injuries and illnesses. This interactive workshop will explore a couple of methods workers can use for identifying job hazards: hazard maps and body maps. Participants will also learn about the strength and weaknesses of each method.

 Investigando Peligros en el Lugar de Trabajo: Métodos que pueden utilizar los trabajadores y miembros de comités para identificar peligros de salud y seguridad en un lugar de trabajo.

Identificando peligros es un paso esencial para promover la salud y seguridad y para prevenir lesiones y enfermedades. Este taller interactivo explorará un par de métodos que los trabajadores pueden utilizar para ayudar a identificar los peligros en lugar de trabajo: mapas de peligros y mapas del cuerpo. Los participantes también aprenderán a describir las ventajas y desventajas de cada método.

Workshop 2

Preventing Workplace Injury-A Proactive Approach

Preventing workplace injury starts with understanding the hazards in your workplace. This workshop will explore how to collect and interpret data with such tools as OSHA logs and worker surveys to determine patterns in your workplace and how that data can be used to prevent further injuries.

Workshop 3

Building Power through Health & Safety Committees

Knowing your roles, rights and responsibility as a member of a safety and health committee can greatly contribute to a committee’s effectiveness. In this workshop we will explore workers’ rights under the OSH act, discuss roles and responsibilities of labor management committees and share contract language.

Workshop 4

Creating leaders through H&S Committees

This workshop explores developing worker leaders through health and safety committees and peer-to-peer education. We will examine the Promotora training model, as a means to identify and train leaders in the community and the workplace to improve health and safety outcomes, and influence workplace practices.

Este taller explora el desarrollo de los líderes de los trabajadores a través de comités de salud y seguridad y educación entre pares. Examinaremos el modelo de capacitación de Promotora como un medio para identificar y capacitar a líderes en la comunidad y el lugar de trabajo para mejorar los resultados de salud y seguridad e influir en las prácticas en el lugar de trabajo. 

Workshop 5

Making the Case For Safety – How to Get People on Board?

Persuading those in charge at your workplace to make changes is not always easy and health and safety is often not on their “radar screen.” An understanding of the underlying political and economic forces that create job conditions is critical to make the case for safety in complex work environments. This interactive workshop will explore strategies from successful health and safety campaigns/efforts on how decision makers got on board to improve the work environment.

 Haciendo el caso para la seguridad – ¿Cómo conseguir que la gente participe

Persuadir a los responsables de su lugar de trabajo para que hagan cambios no siempre es fácil, ya que no consideran la salud y seguridad como parte de su agenda diaria. Comprender las fuerzas políticas y económicas que crean condiciones de trabajo es fundamental para defender la seguridad en trabajos de ambientes complicados. Este taller interactivo explorará estrategias y esfuerzos de campañas sobre salud y seguridad  y cómo los encargados de tomar decisiones se involucran para mejorar el ambiente de trabajo.

Workshop 6

Committees in Action – Involving Other Workers

This workshop explores communication about workplace safety and health. It involves analysis of basic elements of good communication as well as the specifics factors that impact successful dialogue across workers with different levels of awareness of the issues, different status, resources and needs.  Participants will engage in exercises to identify best practices for building strong communication and leadership skills among all.

Workshop 7

Dangerous Potions: Chemical Hazards and Hazard Communication

Chemicals are a common feature of many workplaces. This workshop will explore the health risks that chemicals may pose to workers. We will consider how chemical labels and Safety Data Sheets can be used by workers and their representatives to improve protections and inform safer work practices. We will also describe ways to reduce or eliminate chemical hazards.

Workshop 8

Using Cal/OSHA Effectively – When and How to file a complaint

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the steps workers and employers can take in identifying, preventing, and eliminating workplace health and safety hazards. They will learn the role Cal/OSHA plays in enforcing existing health and safety standards, and how best to navigate the process of filing a claim through Cal/OSHA.

Utilizando Cal / OSHA con eficacia – Cuándo y cómo presentar una queja

Participantes serán capaces de comprender en una manera más profunda sobre los pasos que trabajadores y empleadores pueden y deben seguir para identificar, prevenir y eliminar los peligros de salud y seguridad en los lugares de trabajo. Aprenderán el rol que desempeña Cal/OSHA en el cumplimiento de normas sobre salud y seguridad existentes y la mejor manera de guiar el proceso para presentar una queja a través de Cal/OSHA.
